Hand Review Sessions

Hi All

I've been chatting with a few people and thought i'd try and get a response from some of the member on here about how to go about a usueful Hand Review Session.

I've been playing poker for years but only got "serious" about it in the last few months.

All I've been doing recently is reviewing the losing hands from each session and checking to see if i played correctly (IMO) based on the info available.

My questions for the forum is can you share details on how you review your hands, what hands do you look at? winnners and losers? do you got through every single hand? Do you have a "regime" that you follow when reviewing your history.

Sorry this is so vague, but I'm very new to reviewing histories and would be very interested to know how others approach this area.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Hey Matt. I'm probably not the best person to answer this to be honest, as I have to force myself into reviewing sessions. Even though I know it's important to my game.

I make sure I have at least half an hour going over hands after every session and I usually just go over the hands that were interesting. Marginal spots, big multiway pots or hands where I really had to think. I just to tend to check my thought processes and think it through in a bit more detail and try and determine whether my process was right or wrong - forgetting the results.

When I was starting out I spend a bit more time on it and I keep promising myself that I will spend more time again but I really struggle with the motivation to do it. I have a mate who will religiously spend hours going over all his hands looking for leaks, mistakes and where to extract more value. It's probably why he's getting better than me! I guess there's not really much advice here, other than it's important and do what I don't do and spend some time on it!

The best thing to do is to download a tool for post hand reviews, I use Poker Tracker 3, and if has a nice tool to '1 click' interesting hands. Also it breaks down hands you have played in what position and how profitable you are. An example might be playing KJ in middle position on a 6 max cash table, might lose you alot of money in the long run.

PT3 also has lots of other options that helps you learn and review you play and others. No I dont work for PT, but i do believe this product is worth its wait in gold.

And obviously the more effort you put into reviewing your game, the more you will plug your leaks and extract max out of your opponents, as we all know its not how much we win, its how little we lose when we are beat.

Try PT3 now, you get a 60 day free trial

Also its good to send info to friends to anaylise your hands, as they might see something you might have missed, and you do the same for them. Remember there is only opinions on this matter, and is a fine line between a great call and an awful one

Hope this helps

Herc

Also Matt its best to anaylise winning and losing hands, especially the ones you think after the cards are flipped, could you have won more or could you have lost less.

This will be your extra edge when playing against your opponents

Matt/Herc,

I moved the discussion about the specific hand to a new thread HERE as it's an interesting hand to discuss in it's own right.

Hopefully, we'll get some more thoughts here about general hand analysis.

When I look at my hands it's usually fairly easy to see whether I got it right in the big winners or losers (and also when I got lucky!!)

I suppose one thing I don't review very well is when I could have made more/lost less in a more marginal spot. I end up in several medium sized pots that I probably had control of how big they got and I'm never 100% sure if I maximised profit / minimised loss.
