BEGINNERS GUIDE TO POKER: RULES OF THE GAME
“Poker's a day to learn and a lifetime to master†- Robert Williamson III
The above quote pretty much sums up the universal appeal of Texas Hold ‘em - so simple to learn and begin to enjoy the game, so challenging to become among the best poker players. You could argue that you can never truly master the game of poker, although you can certainly become good enough to earn a lot of money from it if you put the effort in.
You could further argue that you can learn poker in less than a day, and that's the purpose of this guide! It's a good idea to start with learning the rules - we offer a brief of overview of Texas Holdem Rules as well as other poker game rules. Most online poker sites will have their section on the rules of the game, and there are many other resources with in-depth depth descriptions of the rules. Google is your friend if you want to read more on this subject!
An important part of the rules is knowing which hands beat others. Read Texas Holdem Hand Rankings and try to memorise the order. Hand rankings will become second nature when you've been playing poker for a while, but you don't want to waste brainpower on trying to remember them while you're trying to learn how to play poker. Make it easy on yourself and print or write them out if you're struggling to remember them.
Once you have learned and understood the rules and hand rankings, it would be a good time to read an article by VIP Card Club Professional Nick Wealthall. Getting Started in Texas Holdem contains to useful tips and advice to consider before you start playing. A lot of the information in there is covered in more detail later in this guide, but it's an excellent article to get you in the right frame of mind to start playing.
